Office Refrigerator Etiquette

The office refrigerator is a convenience for you to use during the workday. Remember to be considerate of your co-workers as you share this benefit with them.

1. Do not eat or drink foods that do not belong to you.

2. Do not leave food in the refrigerator to rot and smell. If you brought it and didn’t eat it, throw it away.

3. Do not leave foods uncovered. This is especially important when the food has a strong odor. Better yet, try not to bring foods that may have a strong odor such as garlic or onions. This is also good advice for your breath during the workday.

4. If your container leaks or spills in the refrigerator, clean the spill.

5. Do not rummage through your co-worker’s food to see what they brought or make comments about what they brought to eat.

How about “Don’t do your grocery shopping for the week and store it all in the office fridge?”

I bring in my sandwich for the day; others bring in an entire loaf of bread, a package of turkey, a package of cheese, a jar of pickles, assorted condiments, etc. We have 30 people who need to share this one fridge! Make your lunch at home and carry it to work!

And how about “Don’t return partially-eaten foods to the fridge, with the utensil still in them?”

Some of my coworkers will eat half of a container of some kind of take-out, prepared foods and put the styrofoam or plastic container, complete with plastic fork or spoon still in it, back into the fridge. Disgusting! I’d hate to see how their fridge’s look at home.

How about 1 drink per person…not the whole gallon of milk or the 2, 3, 6 and 12 packs of pop!!!

My philosphy is by the end of the day…Fridge is empty.
