A neighbor of mine is notorious for asking the price of everything I, and all my other neighbors, buy or do. After awhile, it has become quite annoying. Despite my comments avoiding the answer to the question and my direct advise that it is impolite to ask the cost, he still continues to ask.
A dear friend of mine told me horror stories from her wedding. She hosted one of the most beautiful weddings I had ever seen. The day after the wedding, guests started calling her home asking what a wedding like that cost.

It is inappropriate to ask the cost of anything.
It doesn’t matter how close your relationship is or how trite a dinner conversation may be. Don’t do it. It’s rude and impolite and places people in awkward situations.
