A married couple has a choice of three types of monograms, traditional, modern and single initial.
A traditional monogram for a married couple reading the monogram from left to right:
1) Wife’s first name initial.
2) Husband’s last name initial. This initial is larger than the initials on each side of it.
3) Wife’s maiden name initial.
A modern monogram for a married couple reading the monogram from left to right:
1) Wife’s first name initial.
2) Husband’s last name initial. This initial is larger than the first name initials on each side of it.
3) Husband’s first name initial.
A single initial monogram for a married couple is the first initial of the husband’s last name.
An engaged couple should never use the married monogram until after the wedding ceremony.
These are the basic rules for monograms. Additional guidelines do exist for situations such as the bride keeping her maiden name and will be discussed in separate entries.

Good site! I really love how it is easy on my eyes as well as the details are well written. I am wondering how I might be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which ought to do the trick! Have a nice day!
When writing out a couples name on the letter head of personalized stationary , whose name goes first ?
When sending correspondence to another couple whose name goes first?
Thank you, i liked this post)
What is the woman keeps her name? What is the monogram in that case?
What IF the woman keeps her name? What is the monogram then?

I hate to monogram things, because I have children from a previous marriage. I feel like hanging a wreath on the front door that is monogrammed excludes them and is inappropriate to display. Is there etiquette regarding this?
In that case, you should use your children’s last name (from marriage #1) in place of your maiden name. So, {First Name initial- Current Last Name initial- Children’s Last Name initial}. Voila, everyone’s included.

I can’t find the answer to this one ANYWHERE! Suppose a woman has remarried. Example: Maiden name: Paige Rita Calhoun First Marriage: Paige Rita Calhoun Douglas Second Marriage: Paige Rita Calhoun Douglas Anderson? If she wants to mongram something with three initials, presuming she uses her first initial on the left, (P) and her (second) married name in the center (A) ….which letter would she use on the right? Please help! Thanks!
Pam
What is the etiquette for doing a wreath for all three of my kids? I have a girl, boy, & girl. Would the oldests first name initial go in the middle or would it go in birth order?
