Telephone Etiquette – Voice Messages

It’s important to update your professional voice message regularly. If you are frequently out of the office, you should change the message daily so a caller knows when to expect your return call and doesn’t move on to your competitor.

If you call my office and I’m in but unavailable to answer, my message may sound like this:

“Hello. You’ve reached the Etiquette School of Ohio and office of Sandy Hyde. Please leave your message and I will return your call before the end of the business day.”

If I’m out of the office for the day, my message may sound like this:

“Hello. You’ve reached the Etiquette School of Ohio and office of Sandy Hyde. I will be out of the office all day Wednesday, July 11. Please leave your message and I will return your call the morning of July 12.”

When you tell your caller they will receive a return call from you by a specific date or time, make sure you follow through. All calls should be returned the same business day unless stated otherwise.
