How To Use A Wedge Of Lemon

If you are served a wedge of lemon to flavor tea, iced tea, fish, or other foods, you may want to squeeze the lemon in the drink or on the food.

Gently squeeze the juice of  the lemon on the desired food while shielding it with your other hand to prevent it from squirting elsewhere.  You may then drop the lemon wedge in your cup or glass if you are flavoring a beverage or place it on the edge of your plate.  It is preferable to place it on your bread plate if you have one at your place setting.

Be A Good Sport

No one likes to be around a poor loser or a gloating winner.  It’s important to use good etiquette skills when playing sports.

To be a good loser:

1. Thank the other player or team members for playing a good game.  Remember, you wouldn’t have had a game to play if they weren’t there.

2.  Don’t call the winning team names.

3.  Remain poised and calm after the game rather than stomping off the court or field.

4.  Promise yourself you will practice to play better next time.

To be a good winner:

1. Thank the other player or team members for playing a good game.

2.  Don’t gloat about your win. It’s good to be happy, but save the big celebration for when you’re with friends and family.

3.  Don’t be too confident about the win. Anything can happen the next time around.

Arrive Before the Bride

When attending a wedding ceremony, it is proper etiquette to arrive before the bride walks down the aisle.

I recently attended a ceremony where the wedding coordinator had to lock the church doors as the bride began to take her walk so guests arriving late would not distract from this special moment or be captured in photos and videos.

Try to arrive at the ceremony fifteen to thirty minutes before the ceremony is scheduled to begin.

Do Not Wander When Dining Out

While on a date or dining with a group, do not leave your table to wander around the restaurant and visit with others. It’s acceptable to excuse yourself from the table to visit the restroom, but make it a direct trip.

I was dining with a group of people this past weekend, and a member of our party left the table and was absent for a significant period of time.  As I gazed around the restaurant out of concern for this person, I saw them at the bar socializing.  Several other people from our table also noticed the reason for the absence.

Such an action communicates a message you would rather socialize with people other than the people you made a commitment to dine with.  In short, it’s rude and reflects a poor image.

Closet Staples for Men

Men should make an investment purchase for a few must-haves in their closets.  These items may be worn for business meetings, job interviews, social events, and religious ceremonies.  By initially spending a little bit more for quality clothing and accessories, you will find they will last for many years and seasons to come.  You will always be prepared and look your best if you own these items.

Invest in the following:

1.  A dark suit. Select wool or a wool blend over polyester.

2.  A white button-down shirt. Choose cotton over polyester.

3. A conservative silk tie.

4.  Dress shoes to match the color of your suit.  Oxfords or wingtips are good choices.

5.  A leather belt to match the shoes.

A Good House Guest is Tidy

A good house guest is a neat and tidy house guest.  Always clean up after yourself when staying in some one’s home.

1. Keep your bedroom neat by making the bed every morning and picking up your clothes.  Do not allow your personal items to sprawl all over the room.

2. Whether you have your own bathroom or are sharing one, hang up wet towels and wash clothes. Your toiletries should be kept neat and organized so they don’t clutter the sink or shower areas.

3. Offer to help clean up after meals.  If you use any dishware during the day, place it in the sink or dishwasher when you’re finished using them.

4. If the homeowners remove their shoes at the door, don’t leave more than one pair sitting at the door during your stay.  When you switch to a new pair of shoes, carry the others back to your room.

5. After reading the newspaper, fold it neatly for the next person to read.

6. Offer to clean up any spills or messes you may make during your stay.

7. Observe and follow household rules. If the homeowners do not eat food in the living room, you should follow suit.

ATM Courtesies

When waiting to use an ATM, be courteous to the person currently using the machine.  Doing your banking in an open, public setting can be intimidating.

1. Stand back and leave enough distance between you and the person using the ATM to give them privacy.

2. Do not attempt to look over the shoulder or sneak a peek at the information of the person using the ATM.

3. Wait for the person using the ATM to complete their transaction and step away before approaching the ATM.

4. Be patient while waiting. It is rude to tap your foot or huff and puff to make them proceed more quickly.

5.  Have your ATM card out and paperwork complete before approaching the machine.  If you’re not ready, let other people use the machine while you prepare.

How to Respond to a Request for Money

If you are in a position to loan someone money and feel comfortable doing so, that’s great.  Make sure you have a written statement that states the date the loan is to be paid back and the amount of interest, if any, that will be added to the loan.  Both parties should sign the statement and keep a copy for their records.

If you are unable  or uncomfortable loaning someone money, simple say, “I am not in a position to do so at this time.”
